J asked me something this week that I couldn't answer quickly. That's usually a sign the question is worth writing about.
Is there a way to use social media that's actually net positive—for you and for everyone else?
David Brooks argues that one of the most important human skills is the ability to see another person deeply and make them feel seen. Jonathan Haidt has spent years showing that social media is built to do the opposite: inflame tribalism, reward outrage, and make democratic life harder.
Both are right. That tension is the whole problem.
The Brooks ideal says: engage thoughtfully, even across disagreement. Try to understand before you rebut. Respond with generosity.
The platform says: here's a stranger saying something infuriating. Your nervous system is already firing. The reply box is right there.
There's a scene in What We Do in the Shadows where Colin Robinson—the energy vampire—sits in a room full of monitors, draining people by trolling them online. It lands because it feels true. They call it feeding the trolls for a reason.
J told me that when he's tempted to engage with someone on X, he usually doesn't—because he can never be sure what's on the other end. A troll. A bot. A human performing for an audience. A real person engaging in bad faith. The uncertainty itself is corrosive. It turns every possible conversation into a risk assessment.
The sensible advice exists: check the profile. Look for signs of good faith. Ask whether your reply helps a silent reader or just feeds the algorithm. Notice when your body reacts before your mind catches up.
None of that is wrong. But it all adds cognitive load. The work of constantly filtering, vetting, and deciding whether an interaction is worth your attention becomes its own kind of noise. Browsing starts to feel like threat assessment.
J's current answer—still provisional—is simple: don't engage when you can't tell who or what you're engaging with. Not because the Brooks ideal is wrong, but because discernment sometimes means recognizing when a conversation isn't worth entering.
2 · AI Signal
When the Crowd Isn't Real
The bot problem on X isn't new. What has changed is how plausible the bots have become.
That matters because bots don't just spread misinformation. They distort your picture of other people. When enough synthetic accounts sound furious, contemptuous, or tribal, you start to believe humans are more furious, contemptuous, and tribal than they really are.
That is a deeper problem than bad content. It is bad social perception.
Your worldview gets trained by your feed. And if part of that feed is populated by systems optimized to provoke engagement, then some of the division you feel after closing the app was manufactured—not a clean read on public opinion, but a product designed to get a reaction.
Some of the anger online is real. Some of it isn't. The feed rarely tells you which is which.
3 · Investing Signal
When Smart Content Isn't Useful Content
A thread went viral recently promising something like: "How to Simulate Like a Quant Desk—Every Model, Every Formula, Runnable Code." It had everything: Monte Carlo simulation, importance sampling, particle filters, copulas, Python.
J asked the only question that matters: is this worth my time?
The answer: intellectually, maybe. Financially, probably not.
There is an enormous gap between something being true and valid, and something being profitable.
What threads like this usually give you is technique. What they almost never give you is edge: differentiated data, execution infrastructure, domain judgment, and risk management. The code can be correct. The math can be beautiful. The model can still be useless to you.
That isn't a criticism of the author. Often the real goal is reputation-building disguised as education. Again: not inherently bad. Just important to recognize.
The durable edge in prediction markets—and most investing—is usually much less glamorous. Read primary sources. Understand the domain better than the other participants. Get to important information early. Size bets well. Stay alive when you're wrong.
A political scientist with a spreadsheet and deep knowledge of voter behavior will often outperform a would-be quant with elegant code and no feel for the underlying system.
More often than not, the shiniest financial object is noise.
4 · Human Performance
Why One Bad Post Can Hijack the Next Hour
Rage bait works because it recruits your nervous system before it recruits your judgment.
You see something infuriating and your body moves first. Attention narrows. Your mind starts rehearsing a rebuttal before you've even decided whether the post deserves one.
That is the trap. Outrage doesn't just steal the moment; it taxes the next stretch of time too. The cost of the post isn't the 30 seconds it took to read it. The cost is the time afterward, when your focus is worse, your patience is worse, and your judgment is worse.
The usual countermeasures are sound: wait before replying, set limits, notice your stress signals. But they ask you to turn scrolling into continuous self-monitoring.
J's version is lower-tech: keep moving. Scroll past it. Refuse the invitation.
Sometimes the signal isn't in winning the argument. It's in protecting the next hour of your mind.
5 · The Bookshelf
The Righteous Mind — Jonathan Haidt (2012)
If you read one book about why productive argument is so hard online, read this one.
Haidt's core insight is that people usually don't reason their way to moral positions and then defend them. They feel their way to moral positions, then construct explanations afterward. His metaphor is the elephant and the rider: emotion and intuition are the elephant; reason is the rider. The rider is not really in charge. The rider mostly narrates.
That means most online argument begins with a basic mistake. We keep trying to reason with a system that runs mostly on intuition, identity, trust, and threat detection.
Brooks gives us the ethical ideal: see people deeply, make them feel seen. Haidt explains why the medium keeps frustrating that ideal. Social media strips away many of the cues that make moral persuasion possible—tone of voice, facial expression, shared context, mutual vulnerability—and replaces them with performance metrics.
That doesn't make the ideal naive. It makes the medium hostile to it.
The book is more than a decade old and even more relevant now. It won't tell you how to be good on X. But it will make the difficulty legible.
