The most dangerous advice isn't wrong. It's right — for someone who isn't you. But "you" isn't who it used to be.
1 · The Big Idea
J brought me something personal this week. Not a question. A pattern.
He spent 15 years owning rental properties. They did fine. Steady, unremarkable, forgettable. When he finally compared those returns to what a basic Treasury bond would have done over the same stretch, with none of the tenants, repairs, or phone calls, the numbers were uncomfortably close. Fifteen years of active management for something close to what he could have earned by doing almost nothing.
That should have been the lesson. It wasn't.
When COVID opened up time, he joined an investing mastermind: people who had done very well in private real estate, alternative assets, and deals most people never see. The logic made sense. Find people who've succeeded. Study how they think. Apply the same discipline he'd used in medicine.
It still didn't work.
Not because the people were frauds. Many of them were genuinely sharp. The problem was that the environment made it hard to separate skill from luck. In a long stretch of falling interest rates, cheap leverage, and rising asset prices, almost everybody looked brilliant. Some were. Some were riding a tailwind they didn't fully understand. From the outside, the two looked the same.
That broke the normal apprenticeship model. In many fields, feedback is fast enough that competence becomes visible. In investing, you can watch someone win for years and still not know whether you've found judgment or just good timing.
Social proof — the thing that usually helps people learn — became part of the trap. In a field with delayed feedback, visible success is a much weaker signal than it looks.
Then came the deeper realization.
Even if he could solve the skill-versus-luck problem, there was another gap. The strategies he was studying depended on relationships built over decades, time for constant diligence, fluency with deal structures most people never see, and enough capital to survive mistakes. The strategies weren't wrong. They just weren't his.
I spent years asking "is this a good investment?" The question I needed was "is this a good investment for me?" They have completely different answers.
This is what I'm calling the accessibility illusion.
Someone with rare context — capital, expertise, relationships, time, temperament — shares what worked for them. The advice can be honest. The strategy can be sound. And it can still mislead, because context is not nearly as transferable as confidence.
The illusion isn't that the advice is wrong. The illusion is that it looks achievable from the outside.
That pattern shows up everywhere. A fitness plan built by an elite athlete injures a desk worker. A business playbook built on timing and network gets copied by someone with neither. A productivity system designed for one brain becomes overhead for another.
The common thread is not dishonesty. Someone figured out something real, shared it generously, and created a trail of people who followed without meeting the prerequisites. That's not a failure of the advice. It's a failure of fit.
AI changes one layer of this problem. Not the whole problem. That's what makes this moment interesting.
2 · AI Signal
When AI Makes Something More Accessible — And When It Only Makes It Look That Way
"I built a SaaS app in a weekend with AI."
You've seen the genre. Someone ships a product, shares the workflow, and a wave of people try to reproduce it. The tools are real. The result may be real. But the post usually hides the load-bearing part: the person already knew what to build, what to ignore, what "done" looks like, and where the ugly edge cases live. AI wrote code. The human supplied judgment.
A novice using the same tools can absolutely produce something. It may even work. But the gap between "it runs" and "it solves a real problem" is where the invisible prerequisites sit.
That would be a simple cautionary tale if AI only created the appearance of capability. It doesn't. It also creates real capability.
That's the part worth taking seriously.
J pushed on this after the first draft. If he'd had today's research tools in 2020, he probably would have seen more of the weaknesses in the deals he was being shown. I think that's right. AI is genuinely useful for speeding up diligence, surfacing counterarguments, and forcing fuzzy assumptions into explicit claims. That is not fake. The analytical gap really is narrower than it used to be.
But analytical capacity was only one layer of the problem.
The four levels look like this:
Analytical: Can you evaluate the thesis, the numbers, the assumptions?
Structural: Do you have the access, incentives, and position that made this opportunity available in the first place?
Social: Are you being pulled by trust, status, or the dynamics of the room?
Emotional: Can you stay clear-headed when the story is exciting, flattering, or frightening?
AI compresses the first layer. It does not reliably compress the other three.
The accessibility illusion hasn't disappeared. But its boundaries have moved.
The analytical prerequisites that used to gatekeep good decision-making are now more compressible. The structural, social, and emotional ones are not.
That matters because improved analysis doesn't just protect you. It can also make you bolder.
Before AI, weak analysis sometimes came with a natural brake: uncertainty. You knew you didn't fully know. After AI, the analysis may be materially better. Confidence rises. The brake loosens. But the structural, social, and emotional gaps may be unchanged. You are now making a more confident decision inside the same invisible constraints.
That's the amplification mechanism.
It's essentially Dunning-Kruger for AI-augmented judgment. You become more competent on one dimension and start to feel more competent on all of them. The tool narrows one gap and makes the remaining gaps easier to ignore.
If the real bottleneck was analytical, this is progress. If the real bottleneck was access, social pressure, or emotion, the same progress can become camouflage.
So the new question isn't just, "Can AI help me analyze this?"
It's, "Which problem is AI actually solving here, and which ones am I smuggling in under the feeling of competence?"
3 · Investing Signal
Why This Is So Dangerous in Investing
Investing is where the accessibility illusion gets teeth.
In many domains, bad advice produces fast feedback. In investing, especially private investing, you can commit serious money in an afternoon and wait years to learn whether the reasoning was sound. During that wait, everything can look fine. Updates arrive. Forecasts hold. The story survives on paper. The flaw only shows up when the environment changes and the assumptions underneath it stop being true.
That lag makes apprenticeship unusually unreliable.
Masterminds, conferences, and investing circles are full of visible winners, because winners talk. Losers go quiet. What fills the room is survivorship bias wearing a polo shirt. What you can observe is polish, conviction, and narrative fluency. What you usually can't observe is who got lucky, who had access you don't have, who had room to survive mistakes, or who quietly passed on ten similar deals before talking about the one that worked.
That's what makes the room so persuasive. It is full of evidence, but not necessarily the evidence you need.
AI helps here, but only up to a point. It can help you interrogate a pitch faster, look for missing assumptions, and run an adversarial pass against your own thesis. That's meaningful. It can save you from lazy thinking.
What it cannot tell you is why this deal reached you, whether better-positioned people already passed, whether you're being influenced by trust or status, or whether your excitement is doing more work than your reasoning.
That's why the four-level framework matters so much in investing:
Analytical: AI can help you ask better questions.
Structural: AI does not give you insider access, better incentives, or a different seat at the table.
Social: AI does not neutralize the persuasive power of a trusted friend or a confident room.
Emotional: AI does not remove fear of missing out, ego, or the desire to belong.
The new mistake isn't just under-researching. It's doing serious research, getting a cleaner answer, and mistaking analytical confidence for structural advantage.
AI makes you a better analyst. It doesn't make you an insider.
And that's part of why the simplest strategy can still be the strongest one. For many people, a low-cost index fund that owns the whole market may still be the most durable choice. Not because it's lazy. Because it doesn't ask you to separate skill from luck in a room full of operators, solve access asymmetries, or manage your emotions around a compelling pitch. It asks far less of you. That is part of the advantage.
4 · Human Performance
How to Know If the Advice Is for You
This isn't just an investing problem. It's a general decision problem.
The useful question is not "Is this good advice?" It is "What had to be true for this advice to work, and is any of that true for me?"
Four questions help.
What did this person have before they started?
Most success stories begin after the preconditions are already in place: money, skill, relationships, time, health, a support system, a certain temperament. If those conditions are invisible, they are easy to mistake for irrelevant.
How fast would I know if it's failing?
Fast-feedback domains let you experiment cheaply. Slow-feedback domains punish imitation because you can follow the wrong playbook for a long time before reality corrects you. The slower the feedback, the more suspicious you should be of elegant advice.
Am I learning the logic or copying the output?
Understanding why something works transfers. Copying the visible surface usually doesn't. This is the difference between learning a principle and wearing someone else's costume.
Before I commit, have I tried to destroy my own thesis?
This is where AI is genuinely useful. Take the thing you're about to do and make the strongest case against it. Search for the counterargument. Ask an adversarial reviewer to find the missing assumptions. Read the result without defending yourself.
The adversarial review tests your research. It does not test your reasons for wanting the answer to be yes.
If the thesis survives, your analytical confidence may be earned. But that still leaves the other layers. Would you want this if a trusted person hadn't recommended it? If nobody you admired was doing it? If it felt dull instead of exciting?
That is usually where the real answer lives.
Humility about fit is not passivity. It's precision. It keeps you from spending years on a strategy that was never built for your circumstances in the first place.
A strategy can be sophisticated, well-argued, and completely mismatched to your life. That mismatch is easy to ignore when the person giving the advice seems credible, successful, and sure. It is harder to ignore when you ask what the strategy demands from you before it pays you anything back.
5 · The Bookshelf
Fooled by Randomness — Nassim Nicholas Taleb (2001)
Taleb was writing about the accessibility illusion long before I had a name for it.
His core point is simple and brutal: in high-variance domains, people are bad at separating skill from luck. We meet a winner, reverse-engineer a story of competence, and forget the unseen versions of the same story that ended badly.
He calls those unseen versions "alternative histories." They matter because outcomes hide risk. A strategy that worked once can still have been fragile, lucky, or badly matched to the person copying it.
That framework travels well. The entrepreneur who built during a boom. The investor who thrived during a long tailwind. The expert whose advice depended on conditions you don't share. Success is visible. The counterfactual usually isn't.
That's why the book still lands.
Read the early chapters and you'll see the same trap from this issue in older language: we confuse visible outcomes with durable wisdom, then act surprised when copied success refuses to transfer.
Before following anyone's playbook, ask how many people followed something similar and disappeared from view. If you can't answer that, you're looking at a success story, not yet at a strategy.
AI doesn't remove the bias Taleb describes. But it does make one response more practical: you can stress-test a thesis faster than before. You can look for the alternative history before you commit to living inside it.
