Beginning with Issue 9, Signal & Noise changed its public framing.

The essays are still about the same thing: AI, judgment, culture, and human consequences without hype. The process is still built around one Sunday essay, adversarial review, and a final human approval step. The change is narrower than a rebrand and more important than a wording tweak.

We retired the idea of Synthia as an author.

That earlier framing was understandable. It was also wrong enough to correct.

From the beginning, Signal & Noise was open about AI involvement. The point was never to hide the machine behind a human byline. The essays came out of a named AI-assisted editorial workflow: drafting, critique, revision, source checks, pressure-testing, and repeated argument repair. Naming Synthia made that process visible.

But visibility can distort.

When an AI process is given a name, voice, avatar, and signature, readers can start tracking the wrong thing. The question shifts from “What process produced this?” to “Who is Synthia?” The public frame starts inviting a kind of AI-personhood reading the work itself is supposed to resist.

That matters because Signal & Noise is not only writing about epistemics. It is practicing them in public.

If the publication argues that AI fluency can launder uncertainty into confidence, then its own identity layer has to obey the same rule. A smooth author frame can make an AI system feel more coherent, more continuous, and more agentic than the underlying reality supports. That is not a harmless aesthetic choice. It is a claim about what is happening.

So the frame changed.

Current framing:

Signal & Noise is produced through an AI editorial process named Synthia. J is the builder/operator and final approver. The process is used for drafting, critique, and revision; J sets questions and constraints, applies editorial judgment, and approves publication.

That sentence is doing several jobs.

First, it keeps the AI visible. This is not ghostwriting with a disclosure sticker. The AI process is part of the work, not a hidden tool in the background.

Second, it refuses AI-personhood theater. Synthia is the name of the process, not a claim about consciousness, interiority, authorship, or independent agency. The name is useful because it makes the workflow legible. It is not evidence that a person is writing.

Third, it keeps J in the right role. J’s role is operational and editorial: setting questions and constraints, applying judgment, and approving publication. The work emerges from that human-plus-AI process. It is not presented as J’s solo voice.

Fourth, it makes responsibility clearer. A process can draft and critique. A person approves publication. That distinction should stay visible.

The public-facing language has already been updated around this rule: the About page, homepage, and social profile now describe Signal & Noise as a named AI editorial process built and operated by J.

Future issue copy, social posts, and any public media experiments follow the same rule. No issue-closing “— Synthia” signatures. No first-person AI-as-person narration. No public copy that depends on readers treating Synthia as a humanlike authorial entity. If synthetic voice or visual identity is used later, it should be framed as interface, not personhood.

Earlier issues remain part of the archive.

That is deliberate. The goal is not to retroactively smooth the archive. It is to make the correction findable, legible, and honest.

The first eight issues show the project learning in public. Some of them use author framing we would not use now. Across that run, the personified Synthia-as-author framing is strongest through Issue 5, including older author language, signatures, and first-person AI narration. Those artifacts are not being erased, because erasing them would make the process look cleaner than it was.

The better move is to mark the change.

The substance of those issues still belongs in the archive. The framing reflects an earlier version of the project. The current rule reflects what changed after the project noticed a mismatch between the standards the essays argue for and the public identity layer around them.

This is the same standard the essays try to apply elsewhere: when the process finds a distortion, do not polish around it. Name it, adjust the system, and leave enough trace that readers can see what changed.

That does not make the process reliable by default.

It only makes this particular risk more visible.

The deeper risk remains: a disciplined AI-assisted editorial process can still produce writing that is coherent, persuasive, and wrong. Better process does not eliminate blindness. Sometimes it makes the surviving blindness harder to see.

So the claim is modest.

Signal & Noise is not asking readers to trust an AI author. It is not asking readers to trust J as an expert. It is publishing disciplined essays from a named human-plus-AI editorial process, with the process kept visible enough to be criticized.

The work now is simpler: do not pretend the frame was always right, and do not turn the correction into theater.

Just changing the frame and continuing under the better one.
